Case Study - “OAKEY” SMITH

Oakey is a lovable 8 year old male blue heeler. Oakey first came to Animal Options approximately 6 months ago in pretty bad shape. He had just recovered from a stay in hospital due to an episode of acute pancreatitis & was also a diabetic suffering from complications. Oakey was 10 kg overweight & was receiving a very high 18IU of Insulin twice daily! Helen had been trying to reduce Oakey’s weight for some time using conventional processed prescription diet food & was feeling frustrated with the overall results. In summary Oakey was not a well doggy...

Helen came to Animal Options to see if we could help. Oakey was referred to one of our veterinarians for an initial assessment. This involves a full overview of Oakey’s history, his diet & immune system function. After careful analysis of his nutrition & immune status Oakey was placed on a natural diet of raw non processed foods including raw fresh protein, vegetables, certain fruits & herbs. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals & enzyme and give Oakey’s tired body the best support. He was also given homeopathic drops to assist weight loss & specialised herbal supplements to help Oakey better maintain steady blood sugar levels...

Fast Forward... Just 6 months on and Helen is amazed at the “New Oakey.” His insulin reliance has decreased significantly (down to 10 IU ) & his waistline has reappeared. Even the staff at Animal Options are amazed at his overall progress in such a short time. Once overweight, lethargic & suffering from multiple complications of diabetes Oakey is now a vibrant, active & healthy canine who is a testament to the value of holistic medicine. Helen jokes, “Oakey eats better than I do now!”

Pancreatitis is a debilitating disease often seen in overweight animals; it is a process in which the pancreas becomes overloaded due to high levels of fat in the diet.
Diabetes is an insufficiency in insulin levels (produced in the pancreas). The body therefore cannot metabolise sugar (glucose) in the blood & levels become dangerously high.

Before switching your pet to a natural non processed diet consultation should be sought with one of our veterinarians. Each patient is treated as an individual & many factors are taken into consideration when developing a nutrition plan. There are many supplements, herbs & formulas available to ensure your pet is receiving adequate nutrients in their natural diet.
